Roughly 50 vehicles have been covered with what appears to be human blood in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm police.

Automobiles, building surfaces and postal boxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they stated in a release.

Police report they were notified late on Wednesday evening, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored fluid.

The fluid had been placed in the form of a swastika, they stated.

Law enforcement then found multiple other vandalized cars and residential walls in the surrounding area.

Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations outlawing the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.

Police state preliminary tests indicate the fluid was probably human blood.

"Currently there is no indication as to its source; authorities are presently not informed of any physical harm in association with the incident," they added.

Municipal representatives stated they were attempting "to solve the mystery" and have requested to the residents for tips.

An important representative stated the attack left him speechless and required to be solved quickly.

"This act hits the center of Hanau and revives the pain of the extremist violent incident five years ago," he wrote on a platform, referring to the murder of nine victims by a gunman focusing on residents of immigrant origin in five years prior.
