Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors the selector has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches set to start on November 21 in Perth.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of taking part.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and there are permutations involved, not only his injury, but further aspects," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he will feature a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of recurring issues, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from several home seasons in a short span.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the series.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the initial game as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
