Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the ability to contest certain rulings from the chair umpire, following the system currently in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step arrives only a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review other decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
